I think that the best part of this movie that drew me in was the aesthetic. there's something about that retro style 80's technicolor theme that really is appealing. The rest of the movie. Other than that, there really isn't anything else that really stands out in this movie, weird having said that despite the movie having both Russell Crowe and Ryan Gosling.
This is a buddy comedy that's plays out in 1980's L.A and lands these two teaming up to try and solve an interesting string of occurrences in the...porn industry
Ryan Gosling is an incompetent dead-beat dad that is also a private eye and Russell Crowe plays the coolheaded and strong character who roughs people up for a price. For as interesting as this movie sounds, it sometimes has some stale parts as well. It follows the incompatible buddy comedy part to a T. and seems like something that has been done many times over. There are some great parts though. For instance, Ryan Gosling plays a great comedy relief part that I never knew he would play before. And Crowe plays the same tough-guy part that hes always played.
Which doesn't make this a BAD movie, just another flatline comedy part with some good comedy bits and a slightly interesting murder mystery like investigation theme to it in retro L.A. Definitely something that I would watch again, but wouldn't go out of my way to re-watch.
