Undergrad Rating: 3/10 other great kids movies you can watch besides this one.
Reviews: Rotton Tomato, IMDb
Where to Find: Hulu
My choice in reviewing this movie stems from the fact that I have yet to do an animated/kids movie for review. I had also seen this movie advertised a lot when it was first coming to theaters. So that made it stand out a little from the other generic kids movies on Hulu.
When it comes to reviewing kids movie as an adult. I think that its a bit of a miss-match because its not supposed to appeal to that adult demographic. HOWEVER, there are still movies designed for children that you can tell have some creative love and passion in their look and story. Where as this movie hopes that the colors and look of the movie is enough to keep the audiences attention throughout the whole movie and nothing more.
Some of the problems with this movie are:
1. It fails at humor. Not only did I not laugh, but I thought that their attempts at making a joke were lacking and not reaching any demographic of viewer
2. It drops its established heartfelt tone at times. It did a good job in the beginning of playing on your heart strings and getting you to care about the main character. Around the end of the first act though, it kind of drops off and doesn't remind you or make you care like you did at the beginning of the movie.
3. The characters don't really stand out. Especially with the animal characters. They all seem very fake and tired character rolls. Mila Kunis is the voice of the boar, and she at times seems like she doesn't want to be there. And the porcupine is voiced on Jon Oliver, who is meant to be the comic relief of the movie. Long story short, I think that he needs to stick with late night political comedy.
I think that the animation style and color palette of the movie really pop, and the idea for the movie is solid enough. Overall, I think that this is just a played out assembly line script that was made just to make some quick cash in the children's movie market.
If you want to watch a good kids movie that everyone will surely enjoy. I suggest Penguins Of Madagascar, Storks, Spider-man: Into The Spiderverse. Or literally any classic Disney movie (excluding remakes).
